All students are urged to get their seasonal flu vaccine this semester. Three clinics are being offered:

For faster service the day of the clinic, please print off and complete the Influenza Immunization Permission sheet and bring with you to the clinic. Copies will also be available at the clinic site. Registration is not required. Please wear a short sleeve shirt for ease of access to your arm.

When do I get help for an intoxicated friend?

If a friend of yours experiences severe intoxication, this places them at high risk for alcohol overdose/poisoning and the resulting medical problems.

The Office of Public Safety, in conjunction with WesWELL, the Dean of Students Office and Res Life will be holding four Severe Intoxication Panels designed to help students understand the best course of action to take for a friend that can not make an informed decision due to their impairment.

The representatives on the panel will speak about the issues from their perspective. The panel discussion will give you a chance to have questions about alcohol policies and procedures answered. You will learn what the signs of severe intoxication are, what Public Safety will do when responding to a call for help, what the Dean of Students Office will do when a student is referred to them after being treated for intoxication and more.

The panels will be held on the following dates and times:

Tuesday September 15th @ 7:30pm in the Fauver Residence Hall lounge
Tuesday September 22nd @ 7:30pm in the Butterfield B lounge
Tuesday September 29th @ 7:30pm in the Clark Hall lounge
Tuesday October 6th @ 7:30pm in the 200 Church Street lounge

Seasonal Flu Vaccine Clinic

Health Services has scheduled the annual seasonal flu vaccine clinic to occur in September and October this year. The CDC and Health Services are recommending anyone younger than 30 years old get the seasonal flu vaccine as soon as it is available.

WesWELL Non-Credit Classes

WesWELL offers non-credit, fee-based classes for the Wesleyan community. Classes begin the week of September 13. Most are taught by certified Wesleyan students or alumni and all meet on campus. This semester, we are offering:

Cardio Kickboxing

Visit the WesWELL Classes website for complete information, including the schedule, class descriptions, fees, recommended equipment, instructor biographies, and all policies. On-line pre-registration is no longer required. Simply attend the first class and complete a paper enrollment form.

Fees may be paid by student account charge, cash or check. You must enroll by September 26, 2009 in order to charge to your student account. After this date, all fees must be paid by cash or check directly to the instructor.

Mediated discussion on violence

Upon the request of students, there will be offered a space in which we can come together and begin to process the violence that has been done to our community, as a community. This is not an organizing or activist meeting, but rather a space to give voice to our concerns, fears, and sadnesses, and to hear the voices of others.

This will be a student-only discussion space mediated by Dr. Karen Singleton and Dr. Suraiya Baluch, who are the Director of the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Program at Columbia University, and the Director of the Sexual Harassment and Rape Education program at Princeton, respectively.

Following the discussion will be lunch from Typhoon and the opportunity to share informally with each other and with Professors Jennifer Tucker and Gina Ulysse. All students are invited and encouraged to attend.

Performers needed for Orientation skits

Students are needed to perform in “Unspeakable Acts” or “In the Company of Others” during New Student Orientation 2009. ”In the Company of Others” is a time when four to five students share their experiences and thus spark the conversation of what it means to live in a diverse community. “Unspeakable Acts” is a series of vignettes which brings into conversation the importance of addressing sexual violence and working toward healthy relationships. Students must be able to return to campus no later than Friday, August 28 and be available to rehearse daily.

Two brief information sessions will be held next Monday; they are optional but attending one will help get your questions answered:

According to WHO, one third of the world population has been actively infected by a virus 100 times more infectious than HIV and one million people are dying of the disease every year, most of whom are Asians, including an estimated 10% of Asian-Americans. This disease is Hepatitis B. Although being preventable and treatable in its early stage, the lack of public attention led to the epidemics in parts of Asia and Africa. In these societies, the ignorance of HBV knowledge effectuates discriminations and other social justice issues. Today, Dr. So is going to reveal the “silent killer” and share his stories in fighting against the epidemics around the world.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Samuel So is the Lui Hac Minh Professor of Surgery in Stanford University School of Medicine, and a famous surgeon in liver cancer. He has won more than 20 awards from different institutions. He is in several committees in IOM (Institute of Medicine of the National Academies ). He is also a well-known social activist. He is the founder of Asian Liver Center, which is the first non-profit organization in US that addresses the high incidence of hepatitis B and liver cancer in Asians and Asian Americans.
